Audiovisual materials can be an important part of your research. This tutorial will guide you on how to work with video files on the Navigating.art platform.
During your research, you may encounter audiovisual materials that are valuable for further investigation. The Navigating.art platform allows you to store, view, and manage these files effectively. Additionally, displaying transcribed text helps researchers quickly locate relevant information within the video, saving time compared to watching the full content.
1. Open the archival resource where your audiovisual material is located.
You can find your audiovisual materials in the media section of the resource. If you haven't uploaded your file yet, follow the instructions outlined in the tutorial on uploading media to the archive.
2. Click the media item to open the video file.
3. Watch the video.
Once you click the video file, a video viewer will open. Click Play to start the video, and use the arrow icons to skip 10 seconds forward or backward. Use the timeline to navigate to any point in the video, and adjust the volume with the speaker icon. To watch in full screen mode, click the full screen icon.
4. Click the transcription icon to view the transcribed text.
Please note that transcribed text is not generated by default. To request a transcription of your video files, contact support@navigating.art.
5. Edit transcriptions.
Activate the Edit mode to modify the transcribed text as needed. For example, you can add a new timestamp to jump to specific points in the video that are most relevant for your research. Additionally, you can manually create a transcript with individual timestamps. Confirm your edits with Save.
6. Add a new timestamp.
To add an individual timestamp, activate edit mode and insert a timestamp at any point using the following syntax:
[h:mm:ss] Speaker Name: [Transcribed Text]
7. Click on any available timestamp to jump to the corresponding point in the video.
8. Search for a keyword within the transcribed text.
Enter a keyword in the respective field and confirm with Enter to see the results.
9. Select the current frame as a thumbnail.
When you find a frame in the video that you'd like to set as a thumbnail, click the corresponding icon to save the current video still as the thumbnail. Note that only video stills can be selected as thumbnails; external image files cannot be used.
